What For No Good Reason Is About
Charlie Paul's 2012 documentary is about the cartoonist Ralph Steadman. It explains his work not through a series of interviews but through the drawings themselves: the process from the moment ink hits the paper to the finished image is on camera. His partnership with Hunter S. Thompson and the drawings he made for Fear and Loathing are at the centre, with Johnny Depp accompanying as narrator. Terry Gilliam, Richard E. Grant and Jann Wenner also speak. The film does not aestheticise Steadman's anger; the line sits there as a political reaction. It competed for best documentary at the 2012 London Film Festival.
