What Forbidden Dream Is About
In the fifteenth century King Sejong and Jang Yeong-sil, an engineer who came from outside the court, worked together for twenty years, designing instruments to measure the sky, give the kingdom a calendar of its own and make its astronomy independent of China. The film tells that partnership as a friendship between two men, and shows how dangerous it was under that order for people from two different classes to share the same dream. Hur Jin-ho directed, with Han Suk-kyu as Sejong and Choi Min-sik as Jang Yeong-sil, and the whole weight of the film rests on what passes between them. For a historical drama it is not about war or court intrigue but about years spent in a workshop. It opened in December 2019.
