John Barnes What Forbidden Games: The Justin Fashanu Story Is About
The documentary tells the life of the British footballer Justin Fashanu. In 1981, moving to Nottingham Forest, he became the first Black player transferred for a fee of a million pounds. In 1990 he said publicly that he was gay, the first professional footballer to do so. The statement came in a time of widespread homophobia and it damaged his career. It also ended his relationship with his brother John Fashanu; their early years had been hard and a rivalry ran between them all their lives. Fashanu took his own life in 1998. The film moves through a rich archive and through interviews with the people close to him. The eighty one minute British documentary by Jon Carey and Adam Darke was completed in 2017.
