What Frida Still Life Is About
The film is about the life of the painter Frida Kahlo and her encounters with the notable figures of her time. Though she lives confined to a wheelchair after illness, operations and amputations, she faces and follows the most colourful and most contested parts of Mexican history, in the years when the mural movement was at its strongest. The film does not build a straight biography; it binds memories, paintings and scenes together out of order. The account uses almost no dialogue and gives its weight to image and colour. Pain here is not material for a story but a continuous condition. Ofelia Medina plays the lead in Paul Leduc’s hundred and eight minute Mexican film, completed in 1986.
