Fukushima: A Nuclear Story

On 11 March 2011 a great earthquake struck Japan and a tsunami followed. The nuclear plant at Fukushima lost its cooling. The documentary was shot over four years starting from that day: what happened at the plant, what the public was told and when. At its centre is one of the few foreign reporters who got into the area. Matteo Gagliardi directed this Italian documentary, and Willem Dafoe reads the narration. The film is not content with a technical account of the accident; it also takes up how the company and the state managed information. Those claims were argued about in Japan and set against the findings of the official inquiries. The footage from the evacuated zones, and the ban on returning, is the part that stays with you.
