Full Tilt Boogie

Sarah Kelly's documentary is about the shooting of From Dusk Till Dawn, but it turns the camera away from the stars and onto the crew. Drivers, electricians, caterers, production assistants and set builders speak, and how a film gets made is told through their working day. The real tension comes from the production being non-union: IATSE members picket outside, the people working inside disagree with each other about it, and Kelly tries to give both sides room. The union president declined to appear on camera. Kelly had previously worked as a production assistant on Pulp Fiction; this was her first film as director and the vantage point comes from that job. It is an unusually honest record of film labour. Who it's for: viewers curious about what happens behind a production and about working conditions in the industry. Who it's not for: anyone wanting analysis of From Dusk Till Dawn itself; the documentary looks at the work, not the film.
