What Future by Design Is About
The documentary is about Jacque Fresco: a self-taught designer and futurist who spent his life designing cities, transport and societies. Fresco proposes a system that runs without money, in which resources are distributed according to need, and calls it a resource-based economy. On his own land in Florida he explains it through models, drawings of circular cities and prototypes. William Gazecki's 2006 film watches him with admiration. Whether the ideas can be implemented, who would make the decisions, and whether technical administration can replace politics are all contested questions, and the voices asking them are not in the film. What is on offer here is a design vision, not a demonstrated model.
