What Garbage Warrior Is About
The documentary follows the work the American architect Michael Reynolds has kept up for thirty years: building houses out of waste such as cans, tyres and bottles, houses that heat themselves without outside energy and collect their own water. Reynolds developed these by experimenting for years in the New Mexico desert, but because the permit and licensing system is closed to such structures he lost his licence and had to go to the state legislature to have the law changed. The film shows both this fight with the bureaucracy and the work he and his team did in areas struck by earthquake and tsunami. Oliver Hodge’s eighty six minute British documentary was completed in 2007 and describes not an idea but a life spent pursuing one.
