What Gaza Mon Amour Is About
The 2020 film by the brothers Arab and Tarzan Nasser follows Issa, a sixty-year-old fisherman in Gaza, and his feeling for Siham, a widow who works at the market. An ancient statue of Apollo caught in his net changes his life; once the statue is confiscated, the matter passes to bureaucracy and the authorities. Its tone is comic, and that choice matters: Gaza is shown here not only as a scene of catastrophe but as a place where people are still embarrassed, still fall in love and still deal with bureaucracy. The effect of the blockade on daily life is felt constantly in the background without being turned into a speech. The rapport between Salim Daw and Hiam Abbass is strong. The pace is slow. Who it's for: viewers who like Palestinian cinema and quiet comedy. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a directly political narrative, or plot.
