What Future Lasts Forever Is About
Sumru, who works on music in Istanbul, travels to Diyarbakır to collect laments for an ethnomusicology thesis, and what she takes for a three-month trip turns into something much longer. Along the way she meets Ahmet, selling pirated DVDs in the street, Antranik, the lone caretaker of a ruined church, and many people who have witnessed the conflict still running in the region. Tracing other people’s grief, she finds the lament for her own loss as well. Özcan Alper’s German, French and Turkish co-production screened in Toronto in 2011, opened in November, and came back from the Adana Golden Boll festival with five prizes.
