What Genesis 2.0 Is About
On the New Siberian Islands in the Arctic Ocean, ground that is thawing opens for a few months a year to Yakut hunters looking for mammoth tusks. The documentary by Christian Frei and Maxim Arbugaev begins beside those men, then moves to the second story opened by a well-preserved mammoth carcass: geneticists trying to bring the species back through synthetic biology, and laboratories pursuing a clone. The film shoots both sides with the same seriousness, people searching the mud for tusks on one hand and scientists discussing the rewriting of life on the other, and shows that a single economy feeds both. George Church is among those who appear. It premiered at Sundance on 20 January 2018 and won the world cinema documentary special jury award.
