What Ghetto Is About
Vilnius, 1942. The Nazis have killed most of the city's Jews and pressed the survivors into a ghetto seven streets wide. Kittel, the officer in charge, holds life and death in his hands alone. About to have Hayyah shot for stealing a kilo of beans from army stores, he learns she was once a successful singer, changes his mind, and allows a theatre to open inside the ghetto. Jacob Gens, the Jewish chief of police, tries to use the theatre and a workshop to save as many lives as he can, handing over some people in order to keep others alive. Gens remains a figure historians argue about to this day. Audrius Juzėnas made the 2006 film from Joshua Sobol's play, with Sobol writing the screenplay.
