Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Border 1: Ghost Pain

Motoko Kusanagi does not yet have her own team. She works in a military unit and is caught inside the investigation into her commanding officer's death. She cannot trust her own memory either; she discovers false memories installed in her cyberbrain and does not know what she chose herself. The subject is not cybercrime but memory being writable from outside. Kusanagi's entire past is a file, and anyone with access to it can construct her as they wish; the film puts identity rather than security at its centre. The form is far from the heavy tone of the original: faster, brighter and weighted towards action. The character design was also changed, which caused argument among followers of the series. The production is the first part of a four-episode series rebuilding the Ghost in the Shell universe. It does not return to the source; it writes a new origin narrative about how Kusanagi assembles her team. The voice cast was entirely replaced and Maaya Sakamoto plays Kusanagi. Masahiko Murata directs. Who it is for: viewers who know the series and are curious about an alternative origin. Who it is not for: anyone expecting the philosophical register of the 1995 film; this version is noticeably shallower and leans on action.
