What Gimme the Power Is About
The story of the Mexican band Molotov is really a pretext for telling the story of the country. The documentary is far less interested in how the group formed than in the Mexico they grew up in during the nineties: seventy years of single-party rule, a media monopoly, corruption, the drug war, and why a band with that much profanity in its lyrics landed as hard as it did. Olallo Rubio cuts archive footage against interviews and refuses to address only the fans, asking instead where politics and popular music actually meet. Molotov's lyrics are both defended and criticised here, and the film does not try to close the argument. The title comes from one of the band's best known songs.
