What Ilusión Nacional Is About

Football is first of all a passionate celebration, but one so large economically, politically and socially that it drags a great many problems along with it. Olallo Rubio's documentary looks at how the world's most popular sport relates to Mexican society and politics: the national team's disappointments, the role of the media, and how power puts football to use. Hugo Sanchez and Diego Maradona appear in archive and interview. Rubio does not sneer at the joy of the supporter; he asks how that joy is managed. The title points at exactly that.
