What Girl 27 Is About
In 1937 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer brought some hundred and twenty young women to a gathering held for its sales representatives, having told them something else entirely. Patricia Douglas, a dancer and extra who was there that night, was raped, and she went to court despite the studio’s order to stay silent; MGM buried the case by buying off witnesses and running a smear campaign aimed at Douglas. The documentary follows David Stenn’s years of research and his finding of Douglas, past eighty and still living in hiding, who agreed to speak; she tells the story openly for the first time. Stenn’s eighty six minute production was completed in 2007, and he had first brought the case to public attention in a magazine article in 2003.
