Girl Rising

The documentary tells the stories of nine girls from nine different countries. Each story was written by a writer from that country and then voiced by an actor. Sokha, scavenging on a rubbish dump in Cambodia; Suma, kept as a bonded servant in Nepal; Amina, married off young in Afghanistan. What they have in common is that each wants an education and each has something standing between her and a school. Richard Robbins directs. Liam Neeson narrates, and Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Freida Pinto and Alicia Keys are among the other voices. The case the film argues is plain: educating girls is the intervention that works best.
