What Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience Is About
A programme lies behind the documentary. It was run by the National Endowment for the Arts. The Endowment sent writers out to the war. The places were Iraq and Afghanistan. Writing workshops were held for the troops. The soldiers wrote about what they had been through. Poems came out of it. So did stories and letters. Diaries and memoirs came too. The documentary starts from those texts. Eleven pieces are read in the film, each given its own visual treatment. There are interviews with the writers, and with older writers who had been to war themselves, among them Tim O’Brien and Tobias Wolff. Richard Robbins made the eighty one minute documentary, an American production finished in 2007.
