Give Me Liberty

Vic drives a medical transport van in Milwaukee. A riot breaks out in the city that day, roads close, and his schedule falls apart. He has to get a group of elderly Russians to a funeral, and at the same time he cannot let Tracy, a young woman with ALS, be late for her appointment. The van fills up, nobody gets out, and the day turns into chaos. Kirill Mikhanovsky sets the film in one of the most segregated cities in America and presents that not as a thesis but through the people sitting next to each other in the van. Russian, English and sign language circulate in the same vehicle. The telling is handheld and built on continuous movement. Chris Galust plays Vic; Lauren Spencer, as Tracy, is a wheelchair-using performer and brings her own experience to the role. Who it's for: Viewers who like narratives built on one chaotic day, multilingual American independent cinema, and disability representation. Who it's not for: The camera never stops and the noise is deliberate, which can be tiring. The plot is also loose on purpose.
