Gondola

Veit Helmer's 2024 film is set on a cable car line in the mountains of Georgia. Iva begins work as a conductor; the two cabins meet halfway along and that moment repeats on every run. There is no dialogue. At each passing the two attendants show each other something; they decorate the cabins, play games and build a relationship out of brief contact. The narrative gives this entirely through action. Helmer is known for making films without speech. The cast is local and the landscape photography takes wide space; the tone is light and fabular. It runs short. Who it's for: those who like wordless narrative and light comedy. Who it's not for: viewers expecting realism; the film stays deliberately at the level of a fable.
