What Goodbye Pork Pie Is About
Gerry hires a small yellow car in Kaitaia on a stolen licence and heads south. On the road he runs into John, whose wife has just left him and who wants to get to Wellington. The two go on together. The police come after them and the journey stretches from one end of the country to the other. Geoff Murphy's New Zealand film is counted among the founding works of the country's own cinema and was the most watched local production of its time. The telling does not put its heroes in the right; both are irresponsible and the film knows it. The landscape is its second character. The yellow Mini is a recognised emblem in New Zealand today.
