What Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia Is About
The documentary lets Gore Vidal tell it himself: novelist, playwright, screenwriter and, for sixty years, the sharpest-tongued critic of American politics there was. Wrathall films him in his last years, at home and travelling, cut against the television appearances he was famous for, above all the 1968 debates with William F. Buckley Jr. that curdled into open hostility. Vidal died in 2012; his nephew Burr Steers and the late Christopher Hitchens both speak in the film. It was plainly made in admiration. Vidal's arguments about empire, history and forgetting are laid out, and the serious objections raised against those arguments are never heard here in their own words.
