What Gosnell: The Trial of America's Biggest Serial Killer Is About
A routine drugs investigation in Philadelphia enters Dr Kermit Gosnell's abortion clinic, and what is found there changes the direction of the case entirely. The film follows the road taken by the prosecutors, the detectives and the court. In 2013 Gosnell was convicted of first-degree murder in the deaths of three infants born alive, and of involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 death of his patient Karnamaya Mongar, who was given an overdose of sedatives; he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Nick Searcy's film was made with the backing of anti-abortion groups and does not conceal that position. Some critics treated it as advocacy cinema rather than documentary. The Gosnell case itself is a matter of court record.
