Green Day: Heart Like a Hand Grenade

The documentary looks at the months Green Day spent making American Idiot. The footage was gathered between 2003 and 2004. The band had not let cameras into the studio before. John Roecker sits inside the room and watches the work. How the songs get built is visible step by step. The group shapes the material by arguing it out in the studio. The producer Rob Cavallo is in the room as well. The album was conceived as a punk opera. The film also holds the night the record was played in full at a small theatre. No other footage of that evening is known to exist. The material sat unreleased for years. The film was shown for a single night in Hollywood in 2009. It reached a wider release in 2015. The years in between turn it into a time capsule. Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt appear in the ninety six minute documentary. It is an American production John Roecker finished in 2015.
