What Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters Is About
To make a single photograph, Gregory Crewdson burns down a house, has ninety-foot sets built by crews of sixty, and shuts down streets. What survives all of it is one frozen, uneasy frame of small-town America: a production the size of a feature film collapsing into a single image. Ben Shapiro filmed the process from inside over a decade, recording the method and also the obsessions, the anxieties and the dreams feeding it. The references Crewdson works from are in the film too, from Hitchcock and Lynch to Edward Hopper and Diane Arbus. The documentary premiered at South by Southwest in March 2012 and was distributed by Zeitgeist Films.
