What Gunner Palace Is About
The documentary by Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein listens to the soldiers of the 2/3 Field Artillery stationed in Baghdad in their own words. The unit is quartered in a bombed out pleasure palace that belonged to Saddam Hussein's son, and the soldiers named it Gunner Palace. The directors spent two separate month long stays with them. When it was filmed matters: months after President Bush had declared major combat operations in the country over. The film advances no thesis, setting the soldiers' accounts, their jokes, their improvised rap verses and their night patrols side by side. The question of how far the official statements match what is on the ground is left to the audience.
