Karl Marx City

The documentary grows out of a personal search. Petra Epperlein grew up in East Germany. Her father took his own life in 1999. An unanswered question was left behind. It was said the man may have worked for the Stasi. Petra sets out to find whether that is true. She applies to the old archives. The files are opened one by one. She talks with her family. Her mother and her brothers tell what they know. The journey travels through the former East Germany. How the surveillance system worked is shown. The years when neighbours reported neighbours are described. Petra Epperlein and Christa Epperlein appear in the eighty nine minute documentary. It is a German and American production two directors finished in 2017.
