What Gypsy Is About

Gypsy was made on a 4 million dollar budget and grossed 11.1 million, making it the ninth highest earning film of 1962; Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood both received Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy, with Russell winning. Ethel Merman, who originated the role on Broadway, was famously furious at being passed over for the film adaptation, and all of Russell's singing in the film was dubbed by Lisa Kirk. Who it's for: anyone curious about a commercially successful classic Hollywood musical with a real Broadway grudge and dubbed singing behind it. Who it's not for: viewers wanting to hear the actors' own singing voices, since the musical numbers are dubbed.
