Hachiko

A university professor in Chongqing finds a puppy in the street and brings it home; his wife does not want it and the children keep it. The dog makes a habit of meeting him every evening at the cable car station. After the man dies it keeps going. Xu Ang made it as the Chinese adaptation of the Japanese Hachiko story and set it in the years a city on the Yangtze was demolished and rebuilt, with the family's move and the disappearance of the neighbourhood part of the story. Feng Xiaogang plays the father. It does not change the known ending and aims openly at feeling. It was a large box office success in China. Who it is for: viewers who like animal stories and family drama. Who it is not for: anyone who dislikes emotional manipulation.
