Happy Accidents

An unusual romantic comedy set in New York. Ruby keeps making the same mistake in relationships. She tells her therapist about the men she has been with and admits there was something wrong with all of them. Then she meets Sam. He is courteous, direct and treats her well. After a while Sam tells her something: he claims to have come from the future, four hundred years ahead. The question the film sets is whether he is lying, ill, or telling the truth. Ruby asks the same question and the viewer stays undecided with her. The narrative does not lean on the science fiction side; no effects, no spectacle. The matter is how far you believe the person in front of you in a relationship. Marisa Tomei plays Ruby and Vincent D'Onofrio plays Sam. Brad Anderson directed. It was shown on the independent festival circuit and never went wide; it found an audience of its own over time.
