Stonehearst Asylum

In 1899 a young doctor fresh from Oxford arrives at a rural asylum and soon works out that the patients have revolted, locked the real physicians in the cellar, and are running the institution themselves. The source is Edgar Allan Poe's 1845 story The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether. Brad Anderson directed. The cast is where the money shows: Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, Michael Caine, Ben Kingsley, David Thewlis and Brendan Gleeson. Shooting began in Bulgaria on 21 June 2013. The film was originally called Eliza Graves and was renamed on 31 July 2014. The second turn is that the man presenting himself as a doctor is also an escaped patient, with a condition involving compulsive lying. It grossed 3.2 million dollars worldwide. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 54 percent, and the Los Angeles Times found that for all its promise the film lacks suspense and any real fear factor, while others praised how well it conveys the creeping horror of Victorian medicine. Who it is for: viewers who like period gothic and asylum stories. Who it is not for: anyone wanting tension. The film knows how to build atmosphere and never raises the pressure above it.
