What Happy He Who Like Ulysses Is About
Antonin has worked on a farm in Provence for twenty five years, and for all of that time alongside a horse called Ulysse. When the farmer decides the animal is too old and sells him to the arena at Arles, Antonin refuses to accept it and simply leaves with the horse. The two of them cross the Luberon, the Alpilles and the Crau toward the Camargue and then the sea. Henri Colpi's 1970 film turned out to be Fernandel's last. The title comes from a sixteenth century sonnet by Joachim du Bellay; Georges Delerue wrote the music, Colpi the words, and Georges Brassens sings it. What it is about is simple: owing something to an animal.
