What Hard to Handle Is About
Lefty Merrill is a fast talking promoter who can squeeze money out of anything. When his partner in a Depression era dance marathon runs off with the prize money, he is left broke in front of the winning couple, and that is where his troubles start; from there he peddles everything he can think of, from treasure hunts to reducing creams. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy from a screenplay by Robert Lord and Wilson Mizner, the seventy eight minute film is a pre-Code comedy and opened on 28 January 1933. James Cagney plays Lefty, with Mary Brian, Ruth Donnelly and Allen Jenkins in the cast. The film openly mocks the advertising and the fads of the crisis years.
