What Harmontown Is About
Harmontown, directed by Neil Berkeley, documents the 21 city podcast tour Community creator Dan Harmon took after being fired from his own show in 2012, joined by Spencer Crittenden, Jeff Bryan Davis, and Erin McGathy. Harmon initially imagined a lighthearted mockumentary, but Berkeley shot a far darker, more self lacerating portrait instead, with the two settling on an arrangement where the tour was Harmon's but the film was Berkeley's. It premiered at SXSW on March 8, 2014. Who it's for: comedy documentary fans unafraid to watch a creator's career crisis and self destructive honesty up close. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a purely fun, easy stand up documentary, since the film directly shows Harmon's more destructive sides.
