What Beauty Is Embarrassing Is About
Wayne White, raised in the mountains of Tennessee, started out as a cartoonist in New York and then became one of the creators of Pee-wee’s Playhouse, work that won him three Emmys. In later years he made the paintings he is known for, sardonic sentences lettered carefully onto old landscape canvases, and became a favourite of the fine art world. Neil Berkeley’s documentary follows those highs and the crashes alongside a man looking for a balance between the work he is paid for and the work that is his. The difficulty is that White wrestles with precisely what he mocks most: vanity, ego and fame. The film also uses footage White shot himself across the years.
