What Harry & Snowman Is About
Harry deLeyer, a Dutch immigrant, came to America after the war and one day bought a worn out Amish plough horse off a truck bound for the slaughterhouse, for eighty dollars. He named him Snowman. In under two years that horse beat the most expensive animals in the country and took the triple crown of show jumping, and the two of them travelled the world together. In Ron Davis’ documentary the eighty six year old Harry tells it himself, still working the circuit. As much an immigrant’s story as a horse’s: neither of them had anything left to lose.
