Hatter's Castle

The year is 1880 and the story takes place in Scotland. On the edge of a small town called Levenford stands a strange building. It is half house and half castle, ringed with thick stone walls. The man who had it built is James Brodie. Brodie is a hatter and believes he comes from noble blood. The townspeople have named the house after him. He rules everyone in it by fear. He is coarse, arrogant, selfish and cruel. His wife has been ailing for a long time. His daughter Mary is afraid of him. His fifteen year old son Angus is his favourite. Even the boy is crushed under his father’s affection. Brodie’s mistress talks him into taking someone on. A young man named Denis is given work at the shop. An attachment begins between Mary and Denis. When Brodie finds out, he throws his daughter out of the house on a night of storm. Robert Newton and Deborah Kerr appear in the hundred and two minute film, a British production Lance Comfort finished in 1942.
