Heart and Souls

An American fantasy comedy. In 1959 a bus crashes and four passengers die. At the same moment a child is born in a hospital nearby. The four souls do not leave. Without knowing why they are tied to that child and stay around him; nobody can see them, only he can. As the boy grows this becomes a problem: he appears to be talking when there is nobody there and is thought strange at school. The souls decide to become invisible to him. Thirty years pass. Thomas is a banker now; good at his work, bad in his relationship and orderly in his life. The souls come back. What they have learned is this: to be able to leave, each of them must finish something left undone. Only Thomas can do it, and his body will be used for it. From there the film tells four stories in turn: a song must be sung, a child must be visited, a theft must be returned and something must be said. Each time Thomas speaks in someone else's voice and manner. Robert Downey Jr. plays Thomas. Charles Grodin, Alfre Woodard, Kyra Sedgwick and Tom Sizemore play the souls. Ron Underwood directed. A pleasant choice for anyone who likes the fantasy comedies of the 1990s. For a viewer troubled by emotional excess, the film plays openly on feeling in its last section.
