What Hello I Am David! Is About
David Helfgott’s life reached the world through Shine, the film that won Geoffrey Rush an Academy Award. Cosima Lange’s documentary follows the man rather than the legend, travelling with him on a European tour and looking as closely at the household as at the concert hall, at the structure his wife Gillian has built around him. After a breakdown in 1970 he spent eleven years in institutions. The film refuses to reduce him to a mad-genius story and lets his speech stand exactly as it is. What Shine claimed is contested: the pianist’s sister Margaret Helfgott wrote a book rejecting the film’s portrait of their father as a tyrant.
