What Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful Is About
The documentary builds the work of the photographer Helmut Newton out of what the women who stood in front of him have to say. Catherine Deneuve, Grace Jones, Charlotte Rampling and Isabella Rossellini speak this time about their own pictures themselves. What comes out of it is a portrait made by the people who were portrayed. The film neither defends nor condemns the way Newton showed women; it leaves the real question open, whether those women were subjects or objects. Some of the women who speak are pleased with those pictures and some are not, and the documentary leaves both in without cutting. Footage of Newton himself comes in between, so the man makes his own defence. Gero von Boehm’s ninety three minute documentary was completed in 2020.
