What Helsinki, Forever Is About
The documentary takes up Helsinki. The form of the work is a montage film. The material used comes from other films. A hundred years of work has been gone through. Leading names of Finnish cinema had shot that footage. Both fiction and documentary works are used. The film draws a portrait of a city by setting these side by side. But the account is not limited to the city. It is also an essay on Finnish culture. The director Peter von Bagh was both a filmmaker and an academic. The account runs in his voice. Erja Manto and Sulevi Peltola also appear in von Bagh’s Finnish documentary of 2008, which runs seventy four minutes.
