Her Difference

Lola Doillon's 2025 French film follows Katia, thirty-five, a researcher at a documentary production company. Her relationship with her boyfriend Fred runs unevenly; while working on a new project she is finally able to name her own difference, and that changes both their lives. The film frames the naming not as a moment of diagnosis but as a relief. When behaviours that had felt strange to Katia for years acquire a name, both she and the people around her have to readjust, and that second stage is the hard part. The musician Jehnny Beth leads. Doillon keeps the narrative inside the relationship; the real question is not who Katia is but what Fred will do with this new information. Who it's for: those who like contemporary French relationship drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting the subject treated comprehensively; the film stays at the scale of one couple.
