What Hibiscus Town Is About
Hu Yuyin runs a food stall in a small town in southern China and does well out of it. When she builds a house with what she has earned, the local cadre declares her a rich peasant, and with the campaigns of the mid-sixties she loses everything. Her husband dies and she is sentenced to sweep the streets. Something forms, quietly, between her and Qin Shutian, who has been given the same punishment. Xie Jin adapted it from Gu Hua's novel, and it became one of the first Chinese films to address the Cultural Revolution directly. Jiang Wen and Liu Xiaoqing star, two of the most recognisable faces of that period.
