What Wreaths at the Foot of the Mountain Is About
The film follows a company of the People's Liberation Army before, during and after the Sino-Vietnamese War. Two men stand at its centre: Zhao Mengsheng, who wants a transfer back to the city and is counting on his mother's rank, and Liang Sanxi, the company commander who gives up his leave and returns to his unit. Xie Jin's 1984 picture does not manufacture flawless heroes; it talks directly about the cost of war, the burden left to the survivors, and what pulling strings means inside an army. Its critique of privilege was what people argued about most.
