Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds

Glen Milner's 2023 documentary follows the game designer Hideo Kojima through the period after leaving Konami, founding his own studio and making Death Stranding. The film centres his way of working and his effort to build a link between cinema and games, with Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Winding Refn, George Miller and Norman Reedus speaking. Its most concrete sections show Kojima's daily work in the studio: meetings with the team, voice recording, motion capture sessions. Its limit is plain; the film was made with the cooperation of Kojima Productions, and the disputes around his departure from Konami are passed over lightly. Criticisms of his games never enter. Who it's for: viewers interested in game design, Kojima's work and documentaries about creative process. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a critical portrait, or unfamiliar with his games and likely to miss the references.
