Hieronymus Bosch: Touched by the Devil

The documentary takes up Hieronymus Bosch. Bosch was a painter of the late Middle Ages. He spent his whole life in the city of Den Bosch. His paintings caused a stir in his own time. Fantastical scenes and figures of the devil were his field. Depictions of hell appear in almost all his work. In 2016 a large exhibition opened at the city’s museum. The exhibition marked five hundred years since his death. The film follows the preparation of that exhibition. A team of art historians travels across Europe. They look into whether the paintings are really his. With infrared analysis they examine the underdrawings. Meanwhile the bargaining over loans from museums goes on. Pieter van Huystee’s Dutch documentary of 2015 runs eighty six minutes.
