What Hired Gun Is About
The documentary is about the musicians who stand on the stage without their names on anything: touring and session players, the people behind the big names. Some have been on the same band's tours for thirty years; some are hired with one phone call and let go with another. What they describe is the same: no contract, no health insurance, no name. One night you play in front of twenty thousand people and the next week you are looking for work. This is the music industry's invisible labour. Fran Strine directs; ninety-nine minutes. The drummer Kenny Aronoff, Liberty DeVitto, who drummed for Billy Joel for years, and Alice Cooper are among those speaking. The film lets the players themselves describe how precarious the work is.
