Hitler: The Last Ten Days

April 1945, Berlin. The city is encircled, the Red Army is a few streets away, and Hitler is in the bunker under the Chancellery. The film covers the last ten days: conferences moving armies that no longer exist on the map, who left and when, the Goebbels family coming down, the marriage to Eva Braun, and the final day. The people in the bunker know the truth and cannot say it aloud. The outside gets in only through the radio and through the faces of the officers who arrive. Ennio De Concini directs; a hundred and six minutes, with Alec Guinness as Hitler and Simon Ward, Adolfo Celi and Diane Cilento in the cast. It is based on the account of Gerhard Boldt, one of the officers who was there. The film does not inflate Hitler; it shows a man in an ordinary room, getting smaller.
