What Hitsville: The Making of Motown Is About
Gabe Turner's 2019 documentary tells the story of Motown Records through its founder Berry Gordy and the people who passed through the label. At its centre is a conversation between Gordy and Smokey Robinson, the two of them remembering old records, the working method and the disagreements between them. Rare performance footage, rehearsal tapes and backstage moments from Motown's vaults and Gordy's own collection run through the film. It covers how a record company was built like a factory, how the quality meetings worked, and what Detroit had to do with it. Made from the company's own point of view, its critical distance is limited.
