What Hollywood Canteen Is About
Two soldiers have three nights of leave before shipping out overseas and go to the Hollywood Canteen. It is a club offering servicemen free food, dancing and entertainment, with film stars waiting the tables. One of them turns out to be the club's millionth visitor. His prize is an evening with the actress he admires. Delmer Daves's film was made as Warner Bros's contribution to the war effort. The Hollywood Canteen was real: it opened in 1942, led by Bette Davis and John Garfield, and through the war it was a place where stars served soldiers. Dozens of actors and musicians appear in the film under their own names. The story is thin; the film is really a variety programme.
